Thesis: Statement (major claim) that controls the content of the paper by indicating subject and position (point of view)
Types of Theses
· Simple thesis: The Dodgers are clearly the best baseball team.
· List thesis – Inferior in argument, okay for basic expository writing (i.e. science, social science, VAPA, etc):
The Dodgers are the best baseball team in hitting, fielding, and pitching.
· Compound thesis: The Dodgers are the best team in baseball, both in playing and in tradition.
· Comparison thesis: The Dodgers are the best team in baseball, but The Yankees used to be.
· Elevated thesis - Indicates strong overall viewpoint which will dictate topic sentences:
While the Dodgers have not won the World Series since 1988, they are clearly the best team in baseball due to consistently excellent play over their 130 year history.
